Among all the flowers that evoke the memories and emotions of war is the red poppy, which became associated with war after the publication of a poem written by LtCol. John McCrae of Canada after the First World War. The poem, "In Flander's Field", describes blowing red fields of poppies among the battleground of the fallen.

For more than 75 years, the VFW's Buddy Poppy program has raised millions of dollars in support of veterans' welfare and the well being of their dependents.

The VFW conducted its first poppy distribution before Memorial Day in 1922, becoming the first veterans' organization to organize a nationwide distribution. The poppy soon was adopted as the official memorial flower of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.

The fundamental difference between our organization and other veterans organizations, and one in which we take great pride, is our eligibility qualifications.

There are three primary requisites for membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States: (1) Citizenship (2) Honorable service in the armed forces of the United States (3) Service entitling the applicant to the award of a recognized campaign medal or as set forth in the Congressional Charter and By-Laws and Manual of Procedure and Ritual.

VFW welcomes all who meet our eligibility criteria. It's through service to this country that all our membership has earned their elite status.

The Ladies Auxiliary VFW was founded in 1914 to help veterans and their families. The organization has achieved its own unique identity while working side-by-side with the veterans who belong to VFW. Like the VFW, the Auxiliary's interest have broadened to encompass the entire community. The Auxiliary embodies the spirit of America that has prevailed through war and peace. It is solidly behind America today as it was when it was founded.

The Ladies Auxiliary is an integral part of VFW Post 5868 and supports a host of programs which pursue issues of national importance to veterans. These programs are designed to preserve veterans rights, advocate a strong national defense, promote patriotism and offer community service. The Ladies Auxiliary is a fraternal, patriotic, historical and educational affiliate of VFW Post 5868.

VFW Post 5868 has a rich tradition of serving veterans, military families and the community. Our meetings are held every 1st Thursday of the month at 7:00pm. We invite you to explore our website to learn more about our organization. Thank you for visiting us.
